It is thought the inner core of the earth can spin independantly as it floats in a liquid metal outer core, a mainstream consensus point of view. Exactly how the inner core rotates has been a matter of debate amongst scientists, we are told. The latest piece of research is going to be controversial, we are also told. Chinese scientists have suggested the inner core came to a near halt in 2009 – and then turned in the opposite direction. They go on to further suggest the inner core rotates back and forth, somewhat like a swing. One cycle of the swing is about 70 years, back and forth. This means it changes direction every 35 years. The rotation is said to roughly line up with changes in the ‘length of day’ – small variations in the exact time it takes the earth to rotate on its axis.
