At https://spaceweather.com … January 27th 2023, we learn a bit more about the disconnection event last week. It seems a CME flew off the sun and hit comet ZTF, breaking the comet’s tail. Astrophotographer Miguel Claro made a video of the event from an observatory in Portugal. It shows a piece of the plasma tail being uprooted from the comet head and it was carried away by the solar wind. Lost. This month, multiple outbursts from the sun have swept by the comet as a result of surging solar activity. One of them was responsible for the disconnection event. None of them seems to have impacted very much on the earth but the sun is currently wide awake.
Over at https://phys.org/news/2023-01-spectacular-impact-craters-earth-highlight.html … which is basically a re-run of well known craters such as Barringer and Chicxulub, but includes craters in South Africa, Australia and Germany.
Meanwhile, we have a link provided by William at https://www.yahoo.com/news/meteorite-hunters-scouring-antarctic-discovery-191315580.html … where it seems many thousands of meteorites, mainly fragments, have been found on the ice of Antarctica. Black shows clearly on a white background. Five new examples were found in December, including at least one large one.
