At https://spaceweather.com … 24th and 25th May, 2024 … The recent geomagneitc storm on May 10th and 11th, which brought auroras much further south than normal, we learn that rocks and soil were electrified as well. Strong electric currents surged through the ground – as much as 10,000 times normal in some places. Back in 1989 a similar geomagnetic event brought down the entire Hydro Quebec power system. The black out affected millions of Canadians. This time, however, the power grids stayed up,
It seems that NOAA models geomagnetic fields during solar storms. A computer crunches data to produce minute by minute estimates of electricity in the ground. It is thought the recent solar storm was about half as intense as the 1989 one.
