At www.physorg.com/print190027752.html there is a story with the title, ‘Discovery that quasars don’t show time dilation mystifies astronomers’ … which sounds like a question mark against the Big Bang Theory. The phenomenon of time dilation is explained by i) the speed of light is constant, and ii) the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate which causes light from distant objects to redshft. As space expands the interval between light pulses also lengthens. This means that if the universe is expanding that must hold true of every part – and object. However, in this study quasars have been seen to give off light pulses at the same rate no matter how far away from earth – with no hint of time dilation. Intriguing.
Astronomer Mike Hawkins from the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh came to this conclusion after looking at nearly 900 quasars over a long period of time. The paper is due to be published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
