Buried under the sand

Sandwiched as it is between the Tien Shan in the north and another high mountain range to the south, the Tarim Basin was once a much more verdant region but has become desertified and represented a serious challenge to travellers on the Silk Road. Houses and temples have been discovered under the sand and date from the Han and Tang dynasty, and on the hills overlooking the basin there are those enigmatic mummy burials.
