Diocletian in Bulgaria

A story that may come up trumps during later excavations is never the less worth looking at for the time being. The town was perhaps a Roman retreat, or resort, on the outskirts of the Sredna Gora mountains near modern Hisarya. The site appears to have been occupied since 6000BC. It is also thought to have been occupied by the Thracians and eventually absorbed by the Romans. Palaces, wide stone streets, marble baths, amphitheatre, monumental fortified walls – and allegedly was known as Diocletianopolis. The excavations are in progress and will take many years.
