The Tanana River appears in Velikovsky's Earth in Upheaval, associated with the Alaskan muck deposits (and underlying gold in the river gravels). He claimed human debris was also found in the muck deposits, subsequently denied – although he quoted a genuine source. It didn't fit the Clovis First theory so never received any traction. However, we now have an archaeological site above the Tanana River Valley that goes back 14,000 years – and they are still digging into earlier deposits. Fourteen thousand years ago, we are told, this area was open grassland, with mammoth, horse and bison. Swan Point (remember the site name) is strategically located to see for miles across the plain and has been used continuously from the end of the Ice Age to modern times. It's older than Clovis, for example, and has a known connection with the Dyukti culture of Siberia via the Bering Land Bridge. However, as the archaeologists note, there is no connection with the other 48 states of the Union. What has been discovered is that people coexisted with mammoths, using ivory for a variety of tasks and artifacts. Yet, they are still penetrating deeper and deeper into the past each new season – and next year they may really get into the Ice Age.
