At http://phys.org/print301909023.html … a paper in Astronomy and Astrophysics claims black holes ingest on surrounding material and convert it into electromagnetic radiation. Perhaps we are getting nearer reality – black holes emit electromagnetic energy. Either that or they are really holes of some kind. What they saw was a spiral structure as the molecular gas cloud at the centre of the galaxy swirls around what is taken as being a hole – which is taken as evidence of material flowing into the black hole and fueling it. However, they also saw material being swept away from the black hole by an energetic outflow. So, what was it they really saw?
