At www.livescience.com/47835-massive-5-000-year-old-stone-monument-revealed… … located 8 miles north of the Sea of Galilee a massive structure, compose of 500.000 cubic feet of stone and at a length of 492 feet, is said to be shaped in a crescent formation – or a serpent. It has been dated by pottery to between 3050 and 2650BC. It was previously thought it was a normal kind of city wall – common in the Levant. However, no city has been found associated with it – it is entirely stand alone (or that is the way it seems at the moment).
It seems designed to stand out in the landscape and it is being speculated it represented the god Sin in some way. He is regarded as the Moon deity – hence the similarity with a crescent. However, if the monument represents a serpent – anthropologists would have to explain why the god Sin took that shape. Was Sin originally a god not associated with the Moon – but some other cosmic object of the night?
It has survived to a height of 7m – which means it was probably somewhat higher in its prime. Is such a structure mentioned in the Bible – and why not.
Other stone structures occur nearby, on the Golan Heights for example (to the east of the Sea of Galilee), the so called Rujum el-Hiri (four circles with a cairn at the centre) and recently a stone monument was found beneath the waters of the Sea of Galilee – a large cairn (date unknown).
