Siberian Faces

   At http://siberiantimes.com/other/others/features/f0264-siberias-stone-idols/ … it seems stone faces in Siberia underwent facial adjustments in the early Middle Ages as a result of new people moving into the area. The original stone idols had European faces and go back to the first millennium BC (presumably to the Scythian period) but 1500 years ago the arrival of Turkic and Mongol tribes into the region led to alterations – such as recutting the eyes into an almond shape and attempting to erase their beards. In this way the newcomers could re-use the site and adapt it to their requirements. Much later, when the Russian arrived in the 17th century the faces underwent further changes – provided with tobacco pipes (in some instances).
