Some of them are up to 1700 feet long and are built across lava domes that may be thousands of years old. There is a cluster of them in the Harrat Khaybur region. The structures have subsequently become known as gates as they look like field gates from above. David Kennedy of the University of Western Australia said the stones gates are fond almost exclusively in bleak inhospitable lava fields with little water or vegetation nearby. He has written a paper for the November issue of the journal Arabian Archaeology and Epigraphy. We may note in passing that the gates (walls) go back to around 5000BC when Arabia, like the Sahara, had higher rainfall and a much greener environment. Were the volcanoes seen as responsible in some way for changing the Arabian climate? Remains of lava flows can actually be seen on top of the stone walls in some places which suggests the structures are older than the volcanoes.
