Hundreds of stone structures dating back thousands of years ago dot the deserts and plains of the Middle East and North Africa. Some are on a huge scale but only from a birds eye view – and only aerial images display the geometric nature of some of them. Some resemble field gates, for example, others kites, pendants, or wheels.They are known the bedouin as the'Works of the Old Men' – meaning their origin occurred a very long time ago. They are found most extensively from southern Syria right across eastern Jordan into Saudi Arabia – and also stretch down the western side of the Arabian peninsular. They occur in astonishing numbers and may have a connection with hunting wild gazelle and wild sheep.
Saudi Arabia is host to cemeteries with thousands of tumuli. A lot is about to be discovered. It seems possible some of these sites go back to the early to mid Holocene when the region was green and supported a fairly large population.
