This is in spite of the molten rock spewed at regular intervals in what is one of Europe's most active volcanoes. However, it is also self evident it produces an  awful lot of water when it erupts – and gases. The source of the water seems to come from water rich deposits inside the Earth – as deep as the Upper Mantle. There is reputed to be as much water inside the Earth as there is in the oceans at the surface. An alternative theory for the water and gases comes from Dr Kayla Iacovino who in 2015 suggested the gases also come from deep within the Earth – chased out by the magma.
