Also sent in by Jovan – go to www.scientificamerican.com/article/evidence-builds-for-a-new-kind-of-neu… …. the article itself is available to read at the pre-porint arXiv server but the authors have presented it to an international conference in Heidelberg in Germany. We have muaon neutrinos and electron neutrinos but what are these new ones? However, a word of caution according to one souce. The researchers are not sure the flashes of light seen are really coming from neutrinos. It is possible some unknown process is producing an excess of photons that mimic the neutrino signal. Fermilab is conducting further tests as well as building two other detectors to sit on the same beam of neutrinos – in order to study their oscillations.
