Which is a revival of the Younger Dryas Boundary event hypothesis. The mainstream view is that an ice dam, that had wonderfully survived for thousands of years, left behind by retreating ice, held back a giant lake of cold water which burst and spilt that glacial water into the North Atlantic – cooling the ocean currents and creating the Younger Dryas. It seems the YD comet impact, we are now told, could have caused the ice dam to breach, releasing a pulse of cold water. Not a lot different it would seem and keeps the mainstream mantra alive and kicking. On the other hand the assumption appears to be that an impact occurred when in fact it is more likely that earth encountered a dense stream of material emitted by a large comet – causing the atmosphere to obscure the light of the Sun and bring on the cold weather of the ensuing younger dryas period. No actual impact is necessary.
