At www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-8527523/ … earthquakes could be triggered by streams of postively charged ions ejected by solar flares on the solar surface – according to a new study. Is this a case of pseudo science becoming mainstream science. Piers Corbyn was laughed out of court when he said something similar a few years ago. Researchers in Rome studied a link between solar eruptions and earthquakes and found within 24 hourse of a coronal mass ejection earthquakes in several locations somewhere on the earth seemed to happen. They speculate these could have been caused by electromagnetic disturbances in the earth triggered by large streams of positively charged ions from the solar wind …
and the same story is at https://tallbloke.wordpress.com/2020/07/17/powerful-eruptions-on-the-sun… … years of tectonic research have shown powerful earthquakes commonly occur in groups, not randomly. Why this is so has remained a mystery. A paper at www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-67860-3 … claims it has a connection with eruptions on the Sun – and the resulting pulse of solar wind striking the magnetosphere of the earth, causing an electromagnetic response at the surface of the earth. They are specifically referring to groups of earthquakes – not by any means all earthquakes. Statistically, it seems, it could be possible, but there are reservations, as one might expect as this is a major paradigm shift, if true. Expect a challenge. Probably a lot of challenges. Other scientists will not like their theories upended.
However, back in 2016 we had another Nature paper that claimed earthquakes could be induced by maximum tidal stress – see www.nature.com/articles/ngeo.2796.pdf … and we must remember that Plate Tectonics is now firmly embedded in mainstream and abandoning it would entail a lot of other disciplines, not just theories around earthquakes.
