At https://phys.org/news/2021-03-world-oldest-crater-meteorite-isnt.html … in 2012 University of Waterloo scientists claimed to have discovered an impact crater. Zircon crystals in rocks are thought to preserve ancient damage done by shock waves, we were told. There was also evidence of rock melt – rocks that recrystalised. This is known as metamorphism. Since then, the region has been investgated for minerals, under close examination. It is now thought a meteor impact was not involved – but see also https://doi.org/10.1016/j.epsl.2020.116730
Hot on its heels came the news that Oumuamua was not a comet. It still has an exotic origin, outside our solar system. It has been decided it was not a comet or an artificial object [such as an alien space ship]. Its shape has changed. Instead of being a cigar shaped chunk of space rock it is now a flattened rock, more like a pancake. It is thought it was a piece of an exo planet that came to a sticky end. See www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-9378111/ … it seems it may have melted at the surface, to account for the strange shape. This is blamed on the sun – or, a sun. It is covered, it is said, in frozen nitrogen.

At https://spaceweather.com [March 12th 2021] we have a story on the great Quebec Black Out – caused by a geomagnetic storm. It occurred in 1989. When a coronal mass ejection rattles earth's magentic field, electric currents flow through the ground beneath our feet. Quebec sits on an expanse of Pre-Cambrian igneous rock that is not a very good conductor. When the CME arrived, currents from the storm made use of high voltage transmission lines. Transformers over loaded and circuit breakers tripped. Quebec was engulfed in darkness and bright auroras could be seen as far south as Florida and Texas, even in Cuba. Auroras were reported in the UK plum country, at Pershore. What happened exactly is that one CME created a pathway for another one closely following in its wake. It struck the earth with some force as it was not impeded. The grid went down in Quebec.
