An international team led by Di Li of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has obtained accurate magnetic field strength in a molecular cloud, a region that seems ready to form stars. This led them to conclude hydrogen gas will gradually condense into a molecular form in such environments. However, many questions remain unanswered. The idea was to determine how the two most common of the hydrogen isotopes converge to create dense clouds that breed new stars. The filament itself lies beneath the plane of the Milky Way.
