Superflares are massive bursts of energy from a stellar surface. On the other hand, novae, including supernovas, are stellar explosions. Or that is the theory. Disturbingly, flares from this particular supernova have been intermittently seen over the last 18 years. What is going on? This nova doesn't seem to want to collapse, or explode. It is still highly active on the surface.
