At www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/66507/title/Shuttle_images_reveal_Egypts_lost_giant_lake/ … what is now a huge sand sheet to the west of the Nile was once a lake as large as Lake Erie before 80,000 years ago. The journal Geology has the story on how it was discovered by images from space and it seems that other lakes existed across what is now the Sahara desert, particularly in what is now Chad and Libya, and stray fish fossils have often popped up in the desert environment and it was these that spurred a detailed imaging of the region.
