Wal Thornhill, in a reply to an email, states, there is no such thing as plate tectonics, the magnetic poles move. An external torque might cause the rotational poles to move – but the slight pear shaped geoid is likely as not a hangover from what we call the 'polar configuration' – an interesting answer. Plate Tectonics is of course a big subject and one of those consensus theories that is constantly being jiggled and adapted to new information. Is the theory being shored up or is it robust?
