At www.ox.ac.uk/media/news_stories/2013/130314_1.html … Egypt in the first millennium BC, including the Ptolemaic era, has thrown up some surprises. A port city known as Thonis to the Egyptians and Heracleion to the Greeks has been found, under the sea and some 6.5 km from the shore. It was a major commercial hub prior to Alexandria, most of which is also under the sea. Maritime archaeologists are looking at it and this web site will provide updates as that search progresses over the years. Nice pictures.
