Predicting ther esult of such a collision was made possible due to an analysis of samples returned to our planet by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency [JAXA] spacecraft, Hayabusa2.
Ryugu is considered to be a rubble pile asteroid and is forecast to come within 62,000 miles of earth at one point in the future. If it entered our atmosphere at an angle of 45 degrees, moving at 38,— mph, Ryugu would break up at an altitude of 25 to 21 miles – over the surface of the planet. This would result in an airburst event – or a series of airburst events. The Chelyabinsk meteor was a fraction of the size of Ryugu.
