Solfatara Crater

27 November 2024

Sent in by William and somewhat thought provoking. What would a supervolcano do for the Net Zero agenda?

At https://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/scientists-warn-of-a-supervolcano-awakening-that-could-trigger-global-chaos/ar-AA1uEJ9o … the Solfatara crater in Italy is showing signs of activity – described as a reawakening. It has been releasing gases since 2005 – emitting co2 in the process. Research by Gianmarco Buono of the Italian Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology says there has been a spike in emissions from the crater. Some 5000 tons of carbon dioxide escape each day – or on certain days. Most of it comes from magma beneath the surface. However, it would also include reactions by hot underground fluids and calcite within rocks. Scientists are trying to understand what is going on. Is magma inching towards the surface?

The crater is on what is known as the Phlegraean Fields. This is interesting as it is thought to represent an outpouring from a supervolcano that blew 40,000 years ago. Where have I heard that number before? It was then an eruption much more powerful than most volcanoes – it is thought. Other factors might have been at play. If it was a supervolcano in the offing and then  that would spew out huge amounts of ash clouds and gases that might even blanket the Earth. The alarmist scenario goes on to say it would render Net Zero pointless. It seems that not only gas emissions have been escaping but ground deformation as a result of tremors. This suggests changes going on under the ground. In spite of this experts fear a false alarm. It may well die back down again. Lastly, the Phlegraean Fields are located in the general Naples region. Not too distant from Vesuvius, which has also been showing evidence of activity – rising and dying back down again.
