Solar jets may hold the key for undertaking complete magnetic reversals is the headline at https://phys.org/news/2024-12-switchbacks-solar-jets-key-magnetic.html … but for more information on the research go to https://doi.org/10.1051/0004-6361/202452019 … which was published in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics in December [2024]. NASAs Parker Solar Probe mission has amassed a lot of data and here it is claimed it has detected the presence of magnetic dislocations in the solar wind. These are now known as switchbacks. These are sudden and rapid reversals of the magnetic field in the solar wind. Switchbacks seem to originate from solar jets. An interesting observation as midway through the eleven year solar cycle the Sun reverses its magnetic signature. Is the solar wind reflecting the near point of change?
Simulation models have been set up to study what is going on in the solar wind. Complete magnetic fields were not observed. Have they included all possibilites in their models?
At https://phys.org/news/2024-12-nasa-solar-eclipse-yield-intriguing.html … which concerns NASAs solar eclipse experiments following the April 2024 eclipse path across the US. NASA helped fund various projects. It also recruited citizen scientists in order to explore how the Sun interacts with the Earth’s atmosphere. Some early results have come in and were presented at the December AGU annual meeting.
