Another curious story – see https://phys.org/news/2024-12-uncovering-centaur-tracks-scientists-unique.html … this one concerns Chiron, a centaur object that orbits between Jupiter and Neptune. They are called centaurs as they are considered to be hybrids – possessing characteristics of both asteroids and comets. The James Webb Space Telescope recently found the surface chemistry of Chiron has both carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide ice along with carbon dioxide and methane gases in its coma. This is said to be an envelope of dust and gases surrounding it.
Chiron orbits in the region of the giant planets and eventually will be ejected from that zone. Where it may end up is not known but the possibility is it will become one of Jupiter’s family of comets. More or less what astronomers have been predicting for some time – but a long time in the future. Could this have happened in the past? Could it have happened in the era of humans? Some British astronomers have suggested it has. They are mostly ignored.
